About Orkney Foodbank

Here is an introduction to our project.

A group of Christians from various churches across Orkney determined there was a requirement to establish an Orkney-wide Foodbank during 2013. This need was further endorsed by those contacted in both the statutory and voluntary sectors from their first hand experiences of those who had presented to them in dire need over the years. Our Foodbank officially opened in November 2013 and became a registered Charity in 2016 – with our registered charity number being SCO16353.

Latest figures indicate 2000 people live below the poverty line in Orkney which is a stark reality. In addition we have one of the highest levels of fuel poverty, which is further hardship to the needy in our community where some have to chose whether they ‘heat’ or ‘eat’.

In addition to foodstuffs we are able to provide basic toiletries and cleaning products and currently, through generous donations, we can also provide electricity top ups to those who are also in fuel poverty so they can actually heat/cook the food we issue.

Such is the level of support across Orkney we have now increased the number of referral agencies to 33 – which is a mix of statutory and third sector bodies.
